This map is used for my shows with a focus on technology. It shows 1707 America and Nouvelle France (the current Midwest). This shows why canals were first considered for effective transportation. The Erie Canal and the Illinois and Michigan Canal were the two great canals of America. The connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Great lakes and then down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Many other canals were built in early America.
